Management Plan for Physical Education

"Through the ample scope of opportunities given to you in physical education, you will learn skills to develop into healthier, stronger, and better individuals."

For my management plan in physical education, I plan to incorporate several different models.  I think one of the best ways to manage a class is to try to develop a relationship with the students in order to establish referent power.  I think it is very difficult for students to disrespect someone they like and have formed a positive relationship with.  In order to do this, I want to use the seven caring habits discussed in the Glasser Model in my class.  As the Kounin Model displays, I want to prepare both myself and my students for whatever we will encounter.  I think it is also important for the rules to be clearly stated to the students, as the Canter Model states.  When problems do arise and the rules are broken I will try to use the Curwin and Mendler model which will incorporate disciplining the students in a way that does not attack their dignity and self-concept.

I.                    Classroom Rules:

·        The rules will be clearly explained to the students on the first day of class

·        Be dressed in proper physical education attire and in your assigned spot on the gymnasium floor within 5 minutes of the tardy bell

·        Show respect for yourself, each other, and the teacher at all times

·        Stay motivated and enjoy the class

·        Respect the equipment and follow all instructions from the teacher

·        If you see an unsafe act stop it or bring it to the attention of the teacher immediately

·        Do not argue any calls made by the teacher during an activity

·        Make transitions from one activity to the next as quickly as possible

·        Use proper language at all times

II.                 Locker Room Rules:

·        Students will be given 5 minutes before class and 10 minutes after class to change clothes/shower

·        Students will be assigned a locker and should not touch others property

·        No horseplay/excessive talking

·        Students should be in and out of the locker room area as quickly as possible

III.               Daily Activities

·        Each student will enter the gymnasium quietly and sit in his/her assigned spot

·        After the first week, 1 student will be responsible for leading the class in stretching each day

·        After stretching, there will be a short warm-up activity

·        Each activity will be explained in full detail and the students will always have the opportunity to ask questions

·        The activities will be chosen to best suit each grade, age, and skill level

·        A wide variety of teaching strategies will be used, which is a process of the Curwin/Mendler discipline plan

·        Teaching and skill cues will be planned for each activity

·        There will always be time for closure at the end of each class period

IV.              Equipment Distribution

·        Each squad will have a group leader each week who is responsible to distribute and replace equipment to their squad

·        Safety will be stressed with all equipment

·        Students will be shown how to properly handle the equipment before they touch it

V.                 Participation

·        A portion of each student’s grade will be based on the effort and enthusiasm they exhibit in class

·        Each student is expected to participate with a good attitude each day

·        Through active participation, students will hopefully develop into lifelong participants of several activities

Group cooperation and teamwork will be stressed

VI.              Discipline Policy

·        Each day, a positive learning environment will be enhanced in the classroom to develop referent power

·        It will be routine to try and catch each student doing something good and let them know about it

·        Good behavior and positive attitudes will be expected from each student on a daily basis, when this occurs I will try to use my reward power

·        When a problem arises it will be vital to address it quickly and stay calm

·        It is imperative when dealing with discipline problems to always be consistent

·        Students may be asked to do writing assignments about a physical activity as discipline, where I will wield my coercive power

VII.            Parental Involvement

·        Each parent will be asked to provide a medical history and any other helpful information about their child before activities start

·        Parents will be provided with information about what their children are doing in class and what they can do to help their child

·        When there are discipline problems that need to be addressed parents will be notified and there will always be an open door policy

VIII.         Grading

·        Each student will be awarded up to 10 points a day for proper clothing, participation, effort, behavior and attitude

·        Students will be notified after class if they have lost more than 2 points in a day or have been losing points on a consistent basis

·        There will also be a few homework assignments and skills testing which will constitute a separate grade

·        Improvement in students social and activity skills will be taken into consideration
